Disaster Hits Home for Japanese

The AFTERMATH a month later …

On March 11, a catastrophic 9.0 magnitude earthquake struck the northeast coast of Japan. The week following the earthquake confirmed 4000 people dead and 8000 missing. Almost exactly a month later and 13,116 deaths have been claimed along with 14,277 others unaccounted for.  The natural disaster created the nation’s most devastating crisis since World War II. A quarter million people are still left without food and water and are struggling to find shelter. The country estimates it will take a solid decade before things return to normal. Japans coastline was susceptible to this type of enormous event not due to the earthquake but because of the miles of flat land that stretches across the northeast coastline. The water consumes the land and takes out anything in its path. A tsunami is often mistaken for a huge crashing wave but in actuality it is an accumulation of a large body of water moving at a rapid pace. Once the water reaches land, it spread like a wildfire. If nothing is there to block or manage the water, it will continue to travel until it is consumed!

SLAVIC?

svytoslav-mech.jpg

The term slave in the Western world is derived from the word Slavic because in ancient times the people of Eastern Europe were gathered up by Vikings and sold off in places like Constantinople.  Expeditions were made from the Baltic Sea down the Dnepr River to Constantinople and villages were pillaged along the way so that they would have people to sell.  These Vikings eventually set up their own colonies and settlements along the route.  Kiev, the capital of modern day Ukraine, was the largest of these and developed into an empire.  In 988 their leader decided to officially adopt Christianity as their religion after being baptized in Constantinople.  A few centuries later Kiev was no longer the center of power after Moscow was founded and the royal family moved to a palace there.  This first era in Russian History is known as the Kievan Rus.

!Dolphin Genocide!

Do you remember the TV show Flipper? I was born in 86’ and can barely remember the last of the reruns airing on random networks. However, I do remember the face of Flipper, Rick Obarry. Rick introduced the amazingly brilliant species to show business with the season premier of Flipper in 1964. His first and only dolphin named Kathy created an immediate attraction to the public with her tremendous abilities. Dolphins are acoustic creatures; they use sonar to detect the world around them and can ultimately see every little aspect in incredible detail. The capacity dolphins have to process information is insane. Rick was able to teach Kathy every trick in the book to entertain spectators. As Rick trained Kathy he began to acknowledge the true intelligence of the animal. He discovered dolphins are actually very independent and provide for themselves. Dolphin’s posses similar emotional awareness and cognitions as humans. Rick Obarry claims dolphins are self aware like we are self aware because they know. Rick did not foresee the multibillion dollar industry he would create at the expense of the dolphin existence. Currently, the going rate for a quality show dolphin is 150,000 dollars. Do you wonder how and where they find these show dolphins? A city on the southeast coast of Japan called Taiji hosts the world’s most dangerous cove for dolphins. The so called Japanese fishermen venture of the coast and herd the dolphins into the cove with a loud high frequency noise. After thousands of dolphins have been cornered into the cove, three nets are placed in the water before nightfall. The next morning the fishermen arrive to the cove alongside multiple consultants from marine exposition companies to select the best looking dolphins. A dozen out of 1000 dolphins will be chosen for the limelight. The rest are executed with a dagger and sold to be eaten for approximately 600 dollars apiece. Dolphin meat is not very popular and is often sold in disguise as fish meat. Dolphin meat is known to contain high amount of mercury and can lead to multiple birth defect because the embryo is the most sensitive.  Some people are aware of their dolphin consumption but most have absolutely no clue. The establishment in the Tiaji cove is considered to be responsible for the largest slaughter of dolphins on the planet. Rick has trespassed thousands of times into the cove attempting to free the dolphins and gather evidence to expose this terrible organization to the world. Rick Obarry once was given the key to the city of Taigi but now is banned for life. Ever since the suicide of his beautiful female bottlenose dolphin, rick has dedicated his life to the liberation of dolphins. He spent 10 years building the industry up and the last 35 trying to break it down. 23,000 dolphins are slaughtered every year. Rick is determined to put a stop to dolphin genocide and you can help him by informing yourself and others about this terrible catastrophe. Public influence will assist Rick to terminate this business and return safety back to the dolphins. Here is a blog to follow to stay updated on the progress. http://savejapandolphins.blogspot.com/

March Madness

On March 17, 1939 America gave birth to one of the most recognized and spectated sporting events in the nation, the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship. The opening tournament began with 8 teams in a single game elimination series. A bracket of four games set up the tournament with Villanova taking on Brown University, Ohio state contending with Wake Forest, Oregon competing against Texas, and Oklahoma battling Utah State. Villanova, Ohio State, Oregon, and Oklahoma went on to create the original Final Four. Following the blow out of two teams in the semifinals, Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois hosted the very 1st of 72 and counting Division 1 Men’s NCAA Basketball Championship games. Oregon University advanced to dominate Ohio State in the championship game. Tomorrow, the slightly expanded tournament continues with it’s 3rd round of play consisting of 16 teams instead of 8. Initially, the tournament bracket only had 3 rounds. Starting this year, the tournament has grown even larger by inviting 68 teams to gather in four cities to compete for a ticket to the Sweet Sixteen. Kicking off the 2011 tournament, 4 teams competed to gain entry into the 6 round, 64 team single game elimination tournament. The annual competition has developed into a national spectacle. 72 years later, the championship tournament remains relevant and is attracting a record number of spectators. The worldwide leader in sports, ESPN, created a contest offering the chance to win a million dollars to whoever could most accurately predict the 64 team bracket. Out of 5.6 million people who participated in the contest, no one predicted this year’s sweet sixteen perfectly. Only one person got 15 of the 16 teams correct. The dynamics of the single game elimination tournament make it extremely difficult to predict. Win or go home is the mentality of the tournament, which creates a huge amount of competition and unpredictable outcomes. The spontaneous uncertainty within the tournament skyrockets publicity and gives reason to the term March Madness. To witness the rest of the 2011 tournament turn your dials to CBS, Tru TV, ESPN, and TNT for full coverage. Enjoy the Madness!

[)< BASSNECTAR >(]

Bassnectar, also known as Lorin Ashton, is a dubstep, electronic, glitch, dance, and breakbeat: producer, artist, and DJ. If you are unfamiliar with the genres mentioned, take a peek at one of his you tube videos to get properly acquainted. This type of music has dug itself up from the bottom to the top. Originating in the early 80’s with more demand for a different sound, electronica hit the mainstream charts in the 90’s with a few groups leading the pack, ATB and Daft Punk. In the late 90’s the electronic movement began to grow rapidly in popularity. With technology advancing at warp speeds, producers, DJ’s and artist were able to create mind blowing music with an innovative approach. Now, a few decades later there are over 100 world class musicians specializing in a variety of electronic music. The genres have expanded into a wide range of styles while maintaining one distinct sound. The creative Lorin Ashton has utilized his natural ability to develop the most depth defying bass music in the world. He began his work in the coast town of Santa Cruz, California and turned himself into an international dubstep super star. Bassnectar combines a penetrating bass with a heavy kick of dream like vibrations. The music consists of a diverse selection of music mixed with a cocktail of mind boggling sounds that blow your senses. Here is a recent mix Bassnectar produced, Ellie Goulding - Lights (Bassnectar Remix). With help from many contributing artists, Bassnectar has made a name for this style of music. Venues are being sold out across the nation to witness these famous DJ’s. These events generate an insane amount of revenue, which perpetuates the industry. Last year, multiple events including Coachella, EDC, and Sasquatch profited millions of dollars. It is nice to see people supporting the music they love. The more influence/following, the better the music will get. Hopefully, the electronica movement will last a few more decades to keep our ears filling with amazing music! I know all of you are definitely captivated or at least curious, so here is Bassnectar’s personal blog so you can keep following.

What if Exercise Was a Pill?

Why do doctors rarely prescribe exercise as a form of medicine? Exercise has proven to dramatically benefit every system of the human body.  A typical doctor’s visit consists of an examination of blood pressure, heart rate, breathing, reflexes, and multiple other tests. If the doctor checks you out and you are clear of any health issues or conditions, you’re fine to continue your lifestyle. However, this is usually not the case. A common diagnosis among the American population is hypertension. Hypertension is high blood pressure as a result of many contributing factors. High blood pressure is associated with a sedentary lifestyle, smoking, stress, over indulging in food, and many other poor health choices. Think how many people you know and witness on a daily basis that subject themselves to these detrimental health issues. When a doctor identifies a hypertensive situation, he or she will prescribe a beta blocker, rennin inhibitors, diuretics, or a number of other synthetic physiological modifications. Very rarely do doctors prescribe exercise to their patients or even offer information about exercise. This is ridiculous because many studies have revealed valid evidence of the correlation between exercise and a reduction in blood pressure. There are many conspiracy theories that can be discussed with this situation. The easiest contradiction to identify is the drug companies make billions of dollars off of people getting unhealthier. Drugs are supposed to make you better, right? Doctors are incognito, either directly or indirectly with the drug companies. If they cured high blood pressure, billions of dollars would be lost and we all know that wouldn’t be good for those big corporate drug manufacturing monsters. If only there was some kind of mandate for all physicians to prescribe exercise before resulting to medication.

What if exercise was a pill?

MAVS!

Mavericks is one of the most vicious and aggressive waves in the world and guess what; it is literally right in our back yard.  15 minutes south of San Francisco at Half Moon Bay is where this amazing mountain of water chooses to occasionally reveal itself. The wave is not very consistent, breaking only a few times a year at 50 feet tall. Can you believe people actually try and ride a wave bigger than a 5 story building? INSANE!!! The annual contest is contingent on swell and weather conditions. Last year this event was able to take place, but the year before there was no swell, so there was no contest. I was fortunate enough to witness the contest last year live and cliff side. Standing nearly 100 yards away from the wave you could hear the cracking of the wave’s lip crashing down on the ocean floor. Sometimes you could feel the ground shaking below you. These men are incredible athletes, not only do they have to have the balls to paddle out there, but they have to actually paddle into the waves and potentially hold their breath for up to 5 minutes. Recently, a local Mavericks surfer had a close call and almost lost his life about a week ago. The surfer was pitched from the top of a 25 foot wave and was knocked unconscious upon impact. Luckily he was rescued and revived and is currently in stable condition. Mavericks is not a wave you can take lightly and is only for those who are crazy enough to conquer its tremendous power. For more info on the local who got caught up in the ocean’s wreckage check out this blog post. Hope you gained some new appreciation for surfers. until next time …
